This week is Architecture Week - I'll have posts on arches, doors, windows, and more this week. I hope you join me, for what would interior design be without good architecture?

When we first moved in you our house, it was 90% complete and had a previous buyer whose financing fell through.  One of the things that potential buyer had done to the house was to have all of the openings between rooms cut into arches.  I immediately had the builder square them off. Here's why - the arched openings were really small, and you can get a larger opening if there are no arches. For example, this opening between my kitchen and dining room:

In retrospect, I could have have the builder enlarge the openings but keep the arched shaped.  I expect the trim would have been a lot more expensive if we had done that though.  That's what I'm telling myself, anyway, because I sure love the look of these arches, especially the ones with trim:

That's all for now.  Please join me tomorrow, same time same place, for Part 2 of Architecture Week.  Here are this week's other posts on architecture:

I am so glad I saw this post! We must think alike because # 1 I love arched openings and # 2 we didn't do them when we built because they were more expensive! Looking back on it I wish I had saved in another area and splurged on really good architectural elements! Now we are just having to "undo" the things we don't love after 12 years of living here! No matter....these are wonderful pictures and I can't wait to show them to my builder (son!) as soon as possible!!! We will be stopping by quite often! when you can, I would love for you to visit vintagemulberry.blogspot.com or mulberryheightsantiques.com
Thanks! Carolyn

Wow if this doesnt' make an arch lover out of everyone who reads your blog..don't know what will!!!! Funny, I have gone full circle about arches, used to not love them then was soso then liked them and now LOVE them, so much so that we put quite a few into our new house...to me, they are more interesting than squared entryways and when beautiful moldings/casings are applied, the effect as you showed above is just stunning!

I'm guilty of peering into the open doorways on Halloween as well!
Arches are so classic and elegant, and add visual interest to an otherwise linear space.
It would have cost much more to apply moldings to the arched entries in your home. The tailored openings are beautiful, and certainly not a decision that you should regret.
You've provided wonderful images in your post - I would love to know what's behind that fabulous pink door...
