Perfect Patina

Monday, February 13, 2012

I was with a friend once and saw something in a store and said "Cool patina." She pretended to know what I meant (she never admits to not knowing something), and picked up a brand new wine glass and said "This one?"  After I stopped laughing, I gave her my precise, professional, definition of patina: "You know, how it looks when it's old." Haha ... not exactly the textbook definition, but it works for me.  My favorites are cream patina and green patina, but there are lots of other beautiful examples here, too:

I had a client once whose 125 year old dining room walls looked JUST LIKE THIS, below.  To date, my biggest professional disappointment is that I couldn't convince her to keep them. She painted over them. In brown  :(

Quite possibly my all time favorite image, below.  It's even my Facebook timeline photo :)

If you want to learn more, Brooke Giannetti's book, Patina Style, is a must read.

Hi DROOLING over this post!!!! This is a keeper! Stacy, hope you are doing well and "hanging in there" and I laughed when you mentioned your friend who "never admits to not knowing something"....we must have the same friend, lol. I love to play tricks, and will invent something or say "did you hear about...." making up a story and she plays right into it like a bee to honey...we laugh about it, its pretty funny. Gorgeous post!!!!!!!! Happy Valentines day!

OMG so many wonderful images with great patina! There's a chest up there that I'm absolutely drooling over! Funny about your friend but if she doesn't collect antiques she won't know.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Love the patina look. The soft greens and blues are naturally aged and its hard to duplicate it any other way. The colors are beautiful.
