I was with a friend once and saw something in a store and said "Cool patina." She pretended to know what I meant (she never admits to not knowing something), and picked up a brand new wine glass and said "This one?" After I stopped laughing, I gave her my precise, professional, definition of patina: "You know, how it looks when it's old." Haha ... not exactly the textbook definition, but it works for me. My favorites are cream patina and green patina, but there are lots of other beautiful examples here, too:
I had a client once whose 125 year old dining room walls looked JUST LIKE THIS, below. To date, my biggest professional disappointment is that I couldn't convince her to keep them. She painted over them. In brown :(
