Decidedly Dramatic Rooms

Thursday, July 20, 2017

This week I've been busy cramming in my son's supervised driving hours so that he can take the test and get licensed before school starts. It's actually kind of fun because it's a lot of time in the car with him, which is where he communicates best, presumably because there are no phones or other things more interesting than talking to mom to distract him. But it is stressful indeed. I can't believe my first baby will be off driving himself to school soon.

And in other big news, I learned yesterday that the TJX Corp. (Home Goods, Marshall's, TJMaxx....) concept store called HomeSense, previously only in Canada and Europe, is opening it's first United States store in Framingham, MA -- only 45 minutes from me!! It looks like it is going to be a higher end Home Goods, with departments dedicated to lighting, art, rugs, and furniture. I will certainly be there opening day (Aug. 17) and will keep you posted!

Onto the rooms, most of which are dark and dramatic, but not at all dreary. I'm liking these a lot lately....

30 Stylish Sunrooms

Monday, July 17, 2017

I think the real trick to sunrooms is to edit, edit, edit. More so than in any other room, because you really don't want the design to compete with the view. So the best ones, in my opinion, are the ones that use less color and pattern and rely on simple, clean shapes so that nature can really be the star of the show. What do you think? Do you agree?

Home Office Changes: Painted Bookcases, Reveal

Monday, July 10, 2017

This actually took me almost a year to do once I chose the paint, so we lived with it with testers everywhere while I tried to find the time to do it. Of course I could scrape up some time, but it's a priority thing. Would I rather paint on a gorgeous Sunday, or be outside? Yesterday I couldn't stand it anymore so I chose paint.

I used Ben Moore Silver Gray (2131-60) and painted with a brush. What. A. Pain. But I do like how it came out.

50 Favorites for Friday

Thursday, June 29, 2017

Today was a very stressful day. First, our oldest is learning to drive, and there are a lot of required driving hours for teens. Obviously this is a good thing, but it's hard to do them all in the time between getting the permit and being old enough for a license, so I push it along by asking him to drive when he's around. I'm sure all of you who have been through this know how stressful it is! He did really, really well, but my car battery died in the parking lot at one of our errands. And I really didn't want to be without a car tomorrow so after we jumped it I had to rush it to our favorite local mechanic and ask him to stay a bit late. And then I rushed home to drive my daughter around and wait for an electrician who was fixing a few things for me. And now it's 8:10 and I haven't eaten all day or fed my kids. So just one of those stressful days, but I'm trying to focus on the positive.

I read the other day that each person's chance of even existing is something like one in 28 billion. So I'm trying to practice gratitude for existence and every thing that involves. So, here goes.... I'm so incredibly lucky to be able to do errands with my amazing son who is one of the most precious gifts in the world. I'm blessed to have a car to drive, the means to fix problems with it, and more importantly, a husband who literally dropped everything without complaint to come help me with the battery. I'm lucky to live in a town where the locals will stay late to help each other, privileged to have food to eat and a warm bed to sleep in, and blessed beyond belief to have this adorable sweet thing who makes me laugh my head off, and who let me hug and kiss her more than usual today.

I'm lucky indeed, and very grateful.

Have a great weekend everyone. Here are my 50 favorites this week....

50 Favorites for Friday

Friday, June 23, 2017

I don't know if you guys noticed that I've been MIA for a week or so - I know you get a lot of emails and may not notice when these don't appear. Everything is fine, but it's been crazy with the kids finishing school. I'll tell you more about my hectic life next week. But for now....

Do you all follow Architectural Digest on Pinterest (here)? My favorite thing that they do, well besides the celebrity homes maybe, is the monthly "most popular rooms" feature. These are all rooms from the last few months of most pinned rooms and I love them all. Enjoy!

Do you all know Arcologica's work? It was founded by Jorge and Martin Sosa, and has several designers now. Their work is not your average architecture and interior work. It's unique and, in my opinion, very interesting. I hope you enjoy!

The Most Beautiful Dinnerware and More From MacKenzie-Childs, Summer 2017

Wednesday, June 14, 2017

The very kind people at MacKenzie-Childs contacted me recently to ask me to review some of their products. It was like a dream come true, and I of course said yes. They were incredibly generous, sending me these four dinnerware sets (chargers, plates, salad plates, and bread plates). Look how gorgeous they are:
